Your privacy

The short version

We're a site about who gives what. So here's exactly what you give us.

Every page is free. Profiles go deeper with a free sign-in. Sign in with just an email address, or with Google. We keep your email address and a few counts that keep the site fair. We never keep your IP address, your browser details or a list of what you read.

What we keep

  • Your account: your email address, the day you joined and the last day you signed in, and how many people you looked up today (a count, never the names). Sign in with Google and we keep your name too.
  • Each signed-in browser: a fingerprint of its sign-in cookie, when it started and when it ends, and how many records it opened this hour and today.
  • Each sign-in link: a fingerprint of the link and its code, kept for a day. A link works once, for 15 minutes.

What we never keep

  • Your IP address, your browser, your device, or where you are.
  • Your name (unless you sign in with Google), or anything else about you.
  • Which records you read.

Your account is never joined to the campaign-finance data.

Names in FEC filings may not be sold or used to ask for money; we do neither.

Signing in with Google

Google gives us your email address and your name. We keep both, so we can show who's signed in, and nothing else from Google: no picture and no access to your Google account.

Email

We email you nothing but the sign-in link you ask for. No newsletters, no alerts, no “chip in $5”. It is sent by Cloudflare Email Service.

Deleting your account

One button on your account page deletes everything at once. An account nobody has used for 12 months is deleted automatically.

Everything we keep, in one paragraph

The record behind each page (who is who, how it all connects, and the filings) opens with a free sign-in. We keep your email address, the day you joined, the day you last used the account, and how many person look-ups it made that day. For each browser signed in, we keep a fingerprint of its cookie, the days it began and ends, and how many records it opened this hour and today. Each sign-in link we send is kept as a fingerprint for a day. We never keep your IP address, your browser details or a list of what you read. If you sign in with Google, we take your email address and your name from it, to show who's signed in. We email you nothing but the sign-in link you ask for, and your account is never joined to the campaign-finance data. One button deletes it, and an account unused for 12 months is deleted.
